Gene Cherng is a member of Hopkins & Carley’s Litigation Department and Intellectual Property Practice. Admitted to the Patent Bar, he has successfully represented patent owners and accused infringers alike in the district courts and the Patent Office in cases involving technologies in the software, electrical, and mechanical arts including:

He has also represented clients in trade secret, copyright, and trademark cases. Prior to joining Hopkins & Carley, Gene practiced Intellectual Property Litigation at Freitas & Weinberg LLP. Prior to law school, Gene worked for two years as a bioanalyst in a major pharmaceutical company.
- Polaris Innovations Limited (W.D. Tex.) Represented Polaris Innovations Limited in patent litigation against various defendants for patents involving dynamic random access memory and memory controllers. Also represented Polaris in inter partes review proceedings initiated by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
- Aquila Innovations Inc. (W.D. Tex) Represented Aquila Innovations Inc. in patent litigation against Advanced Micro Devices for patents regarding power-saving technologies in systems-on-a-chip, Also represented Aquila in inter partes review proceedings initiated by the defendant, and in the appeal before the Federal Circuit.
- Collabo Innovations, Inc. (W.D. Tex) Represented Collabo Innovations, Inc. in patent litigation against Advanced Micro Devices for patents regarding power-saving technologies in systems-on-a-chip. Also represented Collabo in inter partes review proceedings initiated by the defendant, successfully obtaining denials of institution for two petitions filed against the same patent.
- Broadcom Corp. (C.D. Cal.) Represented Broadcom Corp. and Avago General IP in patent litigation against Amazon.com, Inc. and Amazon Web Services, Inc. in which certain semiconductors, audio and video encoding and decoding devices, and content delivery networks were accused of infringing plaintiffs’ patents. In addition, represented Broadcom and Avago in inter partes review proceedings initiated by Amazon regarding the patents in suit.
- MoodMe Belgium SPRL (N.D. Cal.) Represented MoodMe Secured dismissal at the pleadings stage for client accused of infringing a patent and misappropriating trade secrets involving emotion-detecting videoconferencing technology.
- Defended client blogger against copyright infringement and DMCA CMI removal claims.
- Represented patent owner in case against a major tennis racquet manufacturer in smart racquet technology.
