Cary Chien

Cary Chien is a member of Hopkins & Carley’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice in the San Jose office. He primarily focuses on patent and complex IP, trade secret, trademark, and commercial litigation, with extensive experience litigating software and hardware technologies, including:

  • Semiconductors
  • Android and Windows-based smart phones
  • MP3 decoding standard
  • LCD light diffusers
  • Search engine optimization
  • eCommerce software
  • Television programming guides 

Prior to Hopkins & Carley, Cary, who is fluent in Mandarin, worked with a global law firm where he represented high technology companies in both offensive and defensive patent litigation in U.S. Federal Courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission. 

Cary has extensive experience in municipal and state politics. He served as Chief of Staff to a San Jose Councilmember, where he was the principal staff-liaison for land-use policy and development entitlements in the North San Jose Redevelopment Area. Cary also served as an aide to a member of the California State Assembly representing San Francisco.

Before law school, Cary was a test engineer for NetIQ, an enterprise systems management software company in San Jose.
